Eric Zheng, President of AmCham Shanghai, gave opening remarks in which he discussed the stages of China’s economic growth and modernization.

The first panel of the conference was on the topic of “China’s Economy: The Short, Medium, and Long Term.” Dan Wang, Chief Economist at Hang Seng Bank China; Gary Liu, Economist & President at the China Financial Reform Institute; and Zhu Ning, head of Brunswick China and Professor at the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, joined the panel. Ian Driscoll, Director of Communications at AmCham Shanghai, served as moderator. The group discussed the current state of the Chinese economy, structural challenges to consumption recovery and what reforms are necessary to maintain economic growth.

The second panel, “Models of the Future: How Foreign Companies are Adapting Their Business, Financial and Ownership Models to the China Market”, featured Bruno Lannes, Senior Partner at Bain & Company; Alan MacCharles, Partner at Monitor Deloitte; Ke Zhao, Managing Director at China International Capital Corporation; and Walker Wallace, Managing Partner at O’Melveny & Myers. Li Xin, President of Sustenture, moderated. The panelists discussed how to communicate with headquarters about the local market and how to move forward with new adaption models.

The third panel, “Adapting to China: The CEO Perspective”, explored localization within several different industries. The panelists were Fred Freire, Asia President at Kraft Heinz; Simon Yang, President of Aptiv Asia Pacific; and Mei Yang-Mille, the former Managing Director of KARL STORZ Endoscopy. Helen Chen, Greater China Managing Partner at LEK Consulting, moderated the discussion.

The final event of the morning was “The China Imperative for MNCs: Reconfiguring for Opportunity and Risk.” Jeongmin Seong, Partner at McKinsey Global Institute, gave an overview of McKinsey’s new paper on MNCs’ “China imperative,” namely the need to balance the benefits and risks of being in China. Following the overview, Jonathan Woetzel, Senior Partner at McKinsey, and Kenneth Jarrett, Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, discussed how companies can manage disruption and reassess their strategies.

Following lunch, Doreen Wang, CEO of Kantar Greater China and Global Chair of Kantar BrandZ, spoke about “The Reality of the Chinese Consumer Market and Consumer Confidence.” Ms. Wang discussed the latest consumer trends in China and how companies can better understand customer behavior.

The speech was followed by a panel on “Growth Opportunities in China” discussing how companies can use innovative channels to reach new customers. The panelists were Ian Shih, President at Rockwell Automation (China); Christina Kong, Executive Vice President and Market Head at Ecolab Greater China; Lucy Feng, Vice President at BAOZUN; and Jessica Zhao, Marketing Director of Communications & Sustainability at Carrier CHVAC North Asia. The panel was moderated by Oliver Pearce, Director of FGS Global and Chair of the AmCham Shanghai Marketing and Media Committee.

Lesli Ligorner, Partner at Morgan Lewis LLP; and Sarah Wang, HRVP & Deputy General Counsel at AstraZeneca. The panel was moderated by Ted Hornbein, Chair of the AmCham Shanghai Manufacturers’ Business Council. The panelists discussed how businesses can navigate regulatory and compliance challenges and mitigate risks in their China operations.
