Last week, AmCham Shanghai President Ker Gibbs paid a visit to AmCham’s new member Scanfil (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. Scanfil is an electronics manufacturing factory located in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), a booming economic hub in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Christian Kesten, general manager of Scanfil Suzhou received the AmCham group and delivered a presentation to introduce Scanfil Group’s customer sectors and services and its Suzhou operations. Established in Sievi, Finland in 1976, Scanfil has grown from a Finnish manufacturer of sheet metal mechanics for the electronics industry into an international contract manufacturer and system supplier. The group has established 11 factories in seven countries across three continents.  

Christian led the tour with Harry Li, Plant Director of Scanfil Suzhou. The factory has complete production lines that are updated annually. The supply chain includes functions such as Surface Mount Technology (SMT) production, wave soldering and assembly and testing, manufacturing by both human labor and robotic technology. With its latest plan to develop digitalization and automation in 2020, Scanfil is focused on further improving its quality and competence build-up.

After the tour, Ker and Christian held a discussion on how changing US-China relations could have an impact on local businesses and Scanfil’s economic performance. According to Harry, the factory based in China has not been impacted severely by the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the relatively quick speed of work resumption. Ker added that the Chamber has served as a source of vital information and resources for companies throughout the upheaval of the past several months.
