On May 30, AmCham Shanghai hosted its signature 2024 China Trends Forum at the Jing'an Shangri-La hotel. Given China's rapidly evolving business landscape amid geopolitical shifts, regulatory complexities and changing consumer preferences, the full-day forum provided key insights from leading industry experts to help businesses understand these shifting dynamics to thrive in the Chinese market.

Following the opening remarks by AmCham Shanghai President Eric Zheng, the first morning session featured a panel discussion moderated by Lola Woetzel, Senior Partner Emerita at McKinsey & Co, on the short-, medium-, and long-term trajectories of China's economic development. Panelists included Nan Li, Associate Professor of Finance at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Han Shen Lin, Assistant Professor of Practice in Finance at NYU Shanghai and Senior Advisor to The Asia Group (TAG); and Chen Long, Co-founder and Partner, Plenum. The discussion provided a balance of optimistic perspectives on China's strength in innovation and competitiveness, along with concerns about the ongoing property downturn and supply/demand imbalance.

The second morning panel focused on the CEO's perspective of adapting to China's new growth paradigm, with key insights from Henry Ding, Global Senior Vice President of 3M and President of 3M China; Xiangwei Gong, Asia President and Member of Executive Committee, AptarGroup; and Simon Yang, President, Aptiv China and Asia Pacific. This panel, moderated by AmCham Shanghai President Eric Zheng, highlighted the need for business leaders to create certainty in an increasingly uncertain environment, and to redeploy resources to key high-growth sectors in order to thrive in the Chinese market.

紧随其后的第二场上午论坛，聚焦于企业高层如何适应中国新增长模式，3M中国区总裁丁泓禹、阿普塔集团亚洲区总裁龚湘伟，以及Aptiv中国和亚太区总裁杨晓明分享了他们的见解。这场论坛由上海美国商会会长郑艺主持，突出了商业领袖在不断变化的环境中构建稳定性的重要性，并强调了将资源重新配置到关键的高增长领域，以实现在中国市场的持续繁荣。

The forum then moved onto a keynote speech by Jim McGregor, Chairman, APCO Greater China, that analyzed Chinese overreach versus American underperformance in the manufacturing sector as a core dilemma in the bilateral relationship.

To conclude the morning session, the final panel on exploring collaboration opportunities in the new era of US-China relations featured Katherine Chu, Dean, The Tianjin Juilliard School; Jeffrey Lehman, Vice Chancellor, NYU Shanghai; and Xin Li, Associate Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research, Duke Kunshan University as panelists, while Kenneth Jarrett, Senior Advisor, Albright Stonebridge Group moderated the discussion. The discussion focused on the importance of people-to-people exchanges in bridging the gap between the two countries, key challenges for increasing the number of American students studying in China, and climate change mitigation as an area ripe for increased US-China collaboration.

The afternoon session began with a panel discussion examining emerging industries and the implications of future technologies such as AI on business, featuring Ted Lai, Chief Digital Officer, Sanofi Greater China; Chris Tao, Chief Operating Officer, Microsoft Greater China; and Dongliang Guo, Vice President of International Business, Products and Solutions, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. This panel was moderated by Erik Walenza, CEO of IoT ONE Inc and discussed various use cases of generative AI, potential compliance challenges and its role in improving operational efficiency.

The second afternoon panel, moderated by Richard Brubaker, Managing Director at Collective Responsibility, delved into China's green and low-carbon development initiatives. The panelists included Ellen Wu, General Manager, RESET Carbon Environment Management; Yi Yang, Vice President & Head, Global Strategy, Business Development and Venture Capital, Johnson Controls; and Steven Zhong, Lead Partner for the Sustainability Strategy & Transformation Business, PwC China. The panel discussion analyzed key trends on decarbonization and opportunities to optimize energy efficiency across the supply chain, as well as key considerations of ESG reporting for industry players.

随后，由Collective Responsibility董事总经理Richard Brubaker主持的第二场下午论坛深入探讨了中国的绿色和低碳发展计划，锐思碳管理总经理Ellen Wu、江森自控全球投资副总裁杨益，以及普华永道ESG可持续战略与转型主管合伙人钟晓扬分享了他们的洞见，深入分析了脱碳的主要趋势，探讨了在供应链各环节提升能源效率的机遇，并讨论了行业参与者在编制环境、社会责任和公司治理（ESG）报告时需要关注的核心要素。

The forum concluded with a final panel focused on China's changing regulatory landscape, moderated by Di Yao, Head of Legal, Google Shanghai. The panelists included Vincent Law, Vice President, Legal Affairs, Activision Blizard; Jay Ruan, Partner, Baker McKenzie; Tiana Zhang, Partner, Kirkland & Ellis International LLP Shanghai Office; and Yifei Zhang, Partner, Control Risks. The panelists highlighted the rapid speed of regulatory changes and discussed risk management best practices amid increasing localization trends in China.
